Happy St. Brigid’s Day

Scarves out for the attention of St. Brigid on the eve of imbolg!

St. Brigid is a 5th century Irish Saint. And a Celtic fire goddess. How Christianity is interwoven with Celtic mythology is something that can only be sensibly discussed in an Irish pub! Indeed, the celebration of imbolg, about halfway between the winter solstice & the spring equinox, goes back even further. Through the times of the mythological Tuatha Dé Danann & probably further, all the way back to neolithic times. But whatever the origins, February 1st is celebrated as both imbolg & Lá Fhéile Bríde, St. Brigid’s Day.

Neighbours passing by our Canadian homes over the years have been treated to occasional displays of (mostly unrecognizable to them) flags of Irish counties, green lights on Paddy’s Day, & other traditional oddities. Nothing, though, is as strange as seeing scarves tossed onto winter-stripped shrubs at the end of January!

While we are usually still white & frozen at this time of year in Canada, in Ireland, spring is imminent. Crocuses & snowdrops have been blooming in January. And, this year, I’ve already seen pics of bright yellow narcissus blooms on the social media pages of my Irish friends. Though, sometimes, I feel like they’re growing them indoors & sharing pics with the sole purpose of irritating me! 😜

So what’s with the scarves on the bushes?

Brigid, the saint & the goddess both, have a large portfolio of responsibilities. She is the patron saint of farmers, milkmaids, blacksmiths, fisher folk, mariners, children, poets, & Lord knows what else. She stands, side by side, as a patron saint of Ireland, with her contemporary, St. Patrick. Known for her kindness & charity, Brigid is also famous for turning water into an endless supply of beer! Funny enough, she is not one of the patron saints of beer. Go figure!

Again, what is the thing about the scarves?

If you toss a ribbon or scarf out on a bush on the eve of St. Brigid’s Day, it’s said she passes by overnight to bless the cloths. These will then protect you for the next year. And they are reputed to cure ailments, like headaches, pains, & other afflictions! Probably worth a shot, if you are so afflicted.

Hey, if nothing else, especially during these pandemic times, it makes for a great interactive story opportunity for the kids. But, even for us adults, what’s the harm in having a scarf round our neck that’s been naturally freshened outside overnight! 😁

If you have covid-confined kids that you’d like to entertain, try making a St. Brigid’s cross. You’ll find plenty of simple instructions online. If you can’t find any reeds growing around your garden at this time of year, try plastic drinking straws, craft pipe cleaners, or cut strips of card stock. Very entertaining & a great time consumer for kids. That’ll be St. Brigid protecting your sanity during covid too. And I pray those refreshed scarves will keep us all safe ’til we’re vaccinated!

Stay safe out there & …

Happy St. Brigid’s Day! ☘️☘️☘️

DIY Fast Food

DIY Murg Tikka Masala

It’s probably not helping my diet, but I am trying to help my local businesses, by getting takeout. Or maybe I’m just putting that virtuous spin on it by way of excusing the bad behaviour! 😜

Every now & then though, I just don’t feel like another takeout meal. I feel like something home cooked. But I don’t feel like cooking it.

DIY homemade fast-food is the answer.

Between cans, jars, & leftovers, you can sometimes be serving dinner faster than you can find the car keys. Or call out for delivery. Over the course of the pandemic, I’ve noticed an increase in the pantry inventory of canned foods & sauces in jars. It was never a plan, it just evolved that way.

Take that Murg Tikka Masala, for example. It’s a quick concoction of some leftover chicken, frozen peas, a can of mushrooms, & some chopped onion & garlic. With a jar of tikka masala sauce thrown in at the end. A few sprigs of cilantro & a splash (okay, it was a cup or two!) of cream finished it off & it made for a mouth-watering, gustatory delight. Even the rice was that quick-cook type. Bring it to the boil, turn off the stove, & it’s ready to serve when everything else is done. The whole meal had little to no prep time, & very short cooking time. It’s all just too easy. These pandemic skills will be carried forward to when this whole covid thing is, hopefully, just a bad memory for us. Buy some cans & give it a try. And if you already have, send me your fast recipes!

I think that Murg Tikka Masala just means Chicken Pieces in Mixed spices, right? Convert any food name to Hindi & it sounds way more delicious & exotic to my western anglophone ears. I wonder if that works with Irish!?!

Fancy a plate of my special Píosaí Sicín Spíosrach? No? Maybe I’ll just stick to coddle & boxty for the Irish stuff then! 😜😁😂

PS … Make sure you make enough for more leftovers next day. That’s even faster fast food! Stay safe out there.

A New Beginning!

Shrug it off & start anew!

I’m not a big fan of new year resolutions but, after 2020, I find myself making a lot of them this morning. For starters, I haven’t had any weight-loss benefits from blogging about my dietary screw-ups over the past two & a bit years. So I’m writing that off as a failed effort now. Time to wipe the slate clean & begin anew. Starting with a new way of reporting progress, or lack thereof, at the beginning of each month. The pic above is my shiny new weight-loss goal in 2021. This new “reporting” format is just a sneaky way of disguising how much weight I regained towards the end of 2020! But cut me some slack here, please. It’s a little embarrassing & 2020 wasn’t easy, you know! 😜

I weighed in this morning. I have a new tracking app & I logged my weight. The new 50lb target is dialled in. I’m ready to go. Wish me luck. And if you’re starting a new weight-control program, I wish you every success too. Let’s see what we can do before 2022 sneaks up on us! 😜😁

Last year brought pain & despair to many families. But as miserable as it was, 2020 wasn’t all bad. And not for everyone. I’m grateful for the positives too. It threw up a few epiphanies. Only little ones, but these minor events sometimes make little shifts in the direction of our lives. Such tweaks can have a compounding effect that matters. I hope it’s not one of those too-little, too-late things, but I’m now just over two months a non-smoker, for example. Though I’d still kill for a couple of cigarettes with my morning coffee! 🤭

Last year was pretty rough for some of our neighbours. Fortunately, most of us have a little store of kindness on the inside. Sometimes, when we remember that, we can start to make a difference in the lives of others. A lot of us, making tiny positive ripples, can create waves that wash some of the bad stuff away. I’m not preaching at you here, I’m trying to encourage myself to make ripples in this new year. Especially on a beautiful sunny morning like this morning.

To kick off the new year, I think I’ll swing by the ocean today. For a little water-therapy. Maybe I can support a local business on the way back. I just need to make sure that I choose something that doesn’t have me gaining weight the very first day! LOL

I wish you, & those you care for, the very best for the New Year.

May 2021 treat us all kindly!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Seasons Greetings!

I’m taking a break from dieting, healthy eating, & weigh-ins until January 4th. Who’s with me!?! 🤪

No, no, no! I’m just kidding. Stick with your program. I’m sure it’s working better than mine & I wouldn’t want to draw you into my patch of quicksand!

Whatever & however you celebrate, I want to share all the peace, joy & happiness that we can enjoy together at this time of year.
Have a safe & wonderful holiday.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays & Seasons Greetings!

Swings & Roundabouts

Getting bored with the blue masks, think I’ll try these on the bus!

I’m gaining weight, but the rate of gain has slowed, so I’m taking that as a big win this month! 😜

Somewhat grumpily, I’m still a non-smoker. And I’ve been forcing myself to chip away at my home & office decluttering exercise. During this process, I’m finding stuff I didn’t even realise I bigly needed. While I’m selling & donating the stuff that others need. Okay, it’s just crap I don’t need but hey, that’s one of those win-win things, isn’t it? Hate that hackneyed expression. Am I thinking outside the box now?

Clichéd expressions aside, if you’re stuck at home a lot these days, try a little decluttering. It can pay off. It also pushed me to do other things. With an even bigger payoff.

I started decluttering my social media feeds! This is big. I was following political sites. From all sides & ends of the political spectrum. I unfollowed all of them. I followed a bunch of investor types. Precious metals guys, crypto currency gurus, energy fans, even some that are into oil. I think a few got rich more because they were lucky, than smart. Or are they just messing with my head? They’re the rich ones, after all. Maybe I’m Dunning-Kruger-ing myself? It doesn’t matter, I unfollowed all of them anyway.

Not listening to all these people sniping at each other was uplifting. But I wanted even more. Guess where I got it from?

My friends! LOL

I’m not kidding, I’ve got friends on Facebook that were … I know you’ll find this totally unbelievable … but they were stressing me out a little. I didn’t even realize how much ’til I turned them off. Doesn’t matter if it’s about politics, religion, or vaccine positioning, you can kinda tell who isn’t fact-checking stuff & watching the news from both sides, can’t you? Or maybe not! 😜

Anyway, I try to avoid these conversations online. If we could get together & talk over a beer, that might be fun. Social media doesn’t seem to be the place for it though. But you can mute your friends for 30 days & they don’t even know it! If they’re still ranting when they are automatically restored a month later, snooze them for another 30 days! 😂😂😂

The calmness & serenity that follows is a relief & a joy. Maybe I’ll follow the Dalai Lama instead. Ommmm!

Or should I just join the melee? So many doing it. Is being nasty really that much fun!?! 😜😁
